THE MANUFACTURING WORLD EXPRESS presents an exclusive interview with Mr. TP Singh, Vice President Sales – APAC Instrumentation, Teledyne FLIR, where he shares valuable insights into FLIR’s Smart Utility Solutions. In this conversation, he discusses how FLIR’s advanced technologies—including thermal imaging, acoustic imaging, gas detection, and IoT-enabled solutions—are transforming power generation, transmission, and distribution. From enhancing inspection efficiency and employee safety to improving physical security, FLIR’s innovations are helping utilities prevent failures, optimize performance, and ensure reliable power delivery. Stay tuned as we explore how FLIR is shaping the future of smart utilities.

Q: Could you give us an overview of FLIR’s Smart Utility Solutions and how they support the power industry?

Certainly! FLIR offers a complete range of solutions catering to different segments of utilities, including generation, transmission, and distribution. In total, we have around Ten distinct solutions that address various challenges faced by the power industry.

One of our flagship solutions is the T-Series Thermal Camera with routing capabilities, which has been specially designed for transmission companies but can be used by large industries too. What makes this product unique is its optical rotation feature. Unlike cameras where only the display rotates, in our cameras, the optics themselves rotate by either 120 or 180 degrees. This is crucial because most objects that need measurement in the field are located above eye level,  Scanning of points at this height, Traditional point-and-shoot cameras put a lot of strain on the user’s neck, shoulders, and eyes. Over time, repeated use can become physically demanding. Our innovative optical rotation design allows users to capture images comfortably without unnecessary strain, making it highly popular among transmission companies.

Additionally, we have integrated a new feature called ‘Routing,’ which significantly enhances workflow efficiency. This enables supervisors to predefine inspection points- once a field engineer captures an image, the camera automatically prompts the next point in sequence defined . The system records longitude and latitude details, ensuring accurate documentation. This makes inspections more structured, facilitates comparative analysis over time, and simplifies preventive maintenance planning.

Q: That sounds like a game-changing solution! What other innovations have you introduced recently for utility companies?

We recently expanded our product portfolio by acquiring a company in Finland specializing in Acoustic Imaging Cameras. These cameras can detect Partial Discharges, gas leaks and identify leak locations from a distance under running condition. This technology helps utilities locate and fix faults efficiently. Once repairs are made, users can instantly verify whether the problem has been resolved. This contributes to preventive maintenance, improving operational reliability and reducing downtime.

Q: Utility plants such as coal, gas, biofuel, solar, and nuclear energy have distinct monitoring requirements. Do FLIR solutions cater to these specific needs?

Absolutely! Although these power plants differ in their energy sources, they share common critical components such as transformers, bushings, and connectors. Our thermal imaging solutions help visualize and measure temperature variations in these components with an accuracy of ±1°C. This capability is invaluable for detecting overheating and potential failures before they occur, ensuring smooth plant operations.

Q: Substations require 24/7 remote monitoring and predictive maintenance. How does FLIR ensure reliability in power transmission monitoring?

Our fixed thermal cameras are specifically designed for 24/7 monitoring. They come with  special IP rating to operate in all environmental conditions, meaning they can be installed in challenging environments without compromising performance. These cameras can be networked to a central control room—whether in the same city or hundreds of kilometers away. In fact, a single monitoring center can oversee up to 450 different cameras simultaneously, making it a highly scalable solution.

Q: With the increasing demand for smart grids, how does FLIR technology support remote inspections and efficiency improvements?

As I mentioned earlier, our fixed thermal cameras are perfect for remote monitoring. Utilities can install multiple cameras in different locations—whether in Nashik, Aurangabad, or any other place—while monitoring can be managed centrally from Mumbai or elsewhere. This eliminates the need for physical presence at every site and ensures continuous, real-time insights into the grid’s health. The system enhances efficiency, reduces manual inspection costs, and improves response times to faults.

Q: Compliance with global industry standards is crucial in the power sector. How does FLIR ensure regulatory adherence?

FLIR is a global company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and we strictly adhere to all international regulations and European standards. Our dedicated compliance team in Sweden ensures that our products meet the necessary safety and operational guidelines. Since we cater to over 100 countries, compliance is a fundamental aspect of our business strategy.

Q: How can professionals from utility companies stay updated on FLIR’s latest developments and solutions?

There are multiple ways for professionals to stay informed. Our website is a comprehensive resource with over 100,000 pages of technical information, data sheets, and product insights. Additionally, we actively share updates on LinkedIn and other social platforms. For technical queries, professionals can visit flircusthelp.com. Lastly, we encourage direct engagement—our email IDs and contact numbers are available on our website, and we are always happy to assist industry professionals.

Q: Given your extensive experience in the industry, what trends are shaping the future of thermal imaging?

The industry is shifting towards more digital and software-integrated solutions. The combination of thermal cameras with advanced software capabilities is transforming the way inspections are conducted. Additionally, data storage and accessibility have been major challenges for customers. To address this, we have introduced cloud-based image storage solutions, allowing users to access their data from anywhere in the world. This ensures better record-keeping and enhances decision-making efficiency.

Q: What specific products will FLIR showcase at Elecrama 2024?

At Elecrama 2024, we will be showcasing a wide range of products tailored for the electrical utilities sector. This includes:

    • T-Series Thermal Cameras – Ideal for transmission companies
    • EXX-Series Cameras – A cost-effective yet powerful alternative
    • Fixed Thermal Cameras – Designed for 24/7 remote monitoring
    • SF6 Detection Cameras – Specialized for sulfur hexafluoride gas leak detection
