Beckhoff has made a significant leap forward in machine flexibility with its innovative No Cable Technology (NCT) for the XTS intelligent transport system. This breakthrough technology introduces contactless power supply and real-time data communication, allowing XTS movers to function as mobile handling and processing stations, expanding the capabilities of modern manufacturing.

The modular XTS system, already known for its flexibility, now includes a special motor module and electronics that can be mounted directly on the movers, thanks to the integration of NCT. The necessary hardware for this transmission technology is seamlessly incorporated into the motor module, preserving the system’s existing functionality and compact design. Importantly, NCT eliminates the need for additional connections or supply lines, streamlining the setup process. The control of the mover’s hardware is fully managed through TwinCAT, Beckhoff’s automation software, ensuring that all existing TwinCAT functionalities remain available for straightforward project implementation.

NCT introduces the ability to process and inspect product quality directly on the mover during operation. With sufficient power and rapid communication with the TwinCAT control system, connecting sensors and actuators becomes effortless. The real-time data communication, capable of synchronizing system-wide events with microsecond accuracy via EtherCAT, opens up new possibilities for users, particularly in areas such as product handling, machining, and measuring parallel to product transport. Additionally, it facilitates the rapid adaptation of production machines for varying production lots.

Key features enabled by NCT include:

    • Advanced Motion Sequences: Various motion sequences can be executed directly on the mover, such as aligning products during transport.
    • Mobile Handling System: The mover can act as a mobile handling unit equipped with electromotive grippers, lifting magnets, or vacuum suction cups, capable of picking up, transferring, and depositing products.
    • Thermal Processing: Products can be heated or cooled during transport, enabling inline temperature control.
    • Inline Measurement: Integrated data communication allows for real-time measurement and monitoring, including unique mover, toolbox, and product identification as well as state and process tracking on individual movers.

Beckhoff’s No Cable Technology for the XTS transport system is poised to transform the landscape of modern manufacturing, offering unprecedented flexibility and efficiency.
